Pelvic congestion syndrome (PCS) Pioneering Specialist

What is the difference between Pelvic Venous Disorder (PeVD) and Pelvic Congestion Syndrome (PCS)?

Our story begins about 15 years ago with the medical understanding that the deep veins in the abdomen and pelvis of some people can be compressed by nearby arteries because of our upright posture. This new knowledge of how varicose veins can develop in the pelvis, their relationship with veins in the legs and the groin as well as the development of medical technologies like vein stents and intravascular ultrasound (where a tiny tube as thin as the tip of a ball pen is passed into the veins to look at them from the inside) meant medical science finally began to unravel the mystery of the symptoms of Pelvic Venous Disorder (PeVD) or previously known as Pelvic Congestion Syndrome (PCS).

With a greater understanding of the condition came better and more effective treatments, and early in 2021, leading vein, vascular and gynaecological experts from the USA, Canada, Europe, and Asia agreed that that Pelvic Congestion Syndrome (PCS) should be renamed as Pelvic Venous Disorder (PeVD).

The condition has now been reclassified in medical literature, and the importance of a detailed pelvic duplex ultrasound diagnosis, pelvic floor assessment and physiotherapy, psychological treatments like Cognitive Behavioural Therapy or CBT and targeted minimally invasive treatments for vein problems in different regions within the pelvis is now recognised by expert clinicians dealing with Pelvic Venous Disorder on a regular basis.
